3:00pm – 4:00pm Kero One
Presented by Lands’ End Canvas

We are happy to announce the newest addition to our lineup, Kero One. As the winner of the Backstage with Lands’ End Canvas Contest, Lands’ End Canvas proudly presents Kero One at the Clean Lakes Festival.

Known for spearheading the Jazz-Hop movement, Kero One, a talented San Francisco based rapper/producer/DJ, stands as a true testament to the do-it-yourself success story.

Using only his homemade studio and personal credit card, Kero One pressed and released his first 12” record Check the Blueprints in 2003 on his own imprint, Plug Label. Without any experience as to how he should distribute his new record, Kero One spent endless hours researching, cold calling, and seeking help from friends. Of the 50 copies that were eventually distributed around the world, one landed in a tiny record store in Tokyo, Japan. A few weeks later, it was found by a Japanese DJ who played it at a club that night and received dozens of inquires, including a Japanese label executive who immediately contacted Kero One and asked for 3,000 copies of the record.
The record, “Check the Blueprints” became an underground jazzy hiphop classic in Japan almost overnight, and Kero One was invited to tour the country just a few months after. He performed in cities throughout Japan where he was greeted by hundreds of fans waiting to take photographs and autographs, much to his surprise. It was at this point that making a career out of music became a reality. (Announced 8/17/11)

4:30pm – 5:45 pm Roots Collective

Roots Collective is Madison, Wisconsin’s hottest roots reggae band in the finest one drop tradition. This award winning band features a collection of six seasoned musicians that mirror the horn driven reggae beats of Jamaican groups such as The Mighty Diamonds, The Abyssinians, The Wailers & The Skatalites. Formed in 2005, by lead singer/keyboardist Michelle Flood, Roots Collective focuses on playing music with a message that speaks to all people no matter what race, age or background. The players, all from the Madison, WI area have performed with other popular local acts such as Natty Nation, Que Flavor!, Jose & Sumlimes, Tony Brown & Vibe Syndicate.

Making Roots Collective a roots rock reggae force to contend with, and setting them apart from other groups in the area, are flawless vocals and a strong horn section. Michelle Flood brings her naturally strong and elegant voice to original songs that have won her awards and wowed audiences that have experienced their shows. Don Rembert also sings. Both lend their vocal talents to harmonizing on many songs adding more fun to the performance.

7:00pm – 9:00pm
Steez

Categorization be damned, the Madison-based five piece, Steez, consisting of Matt Williams (keyboards/synthesizers/accordion), Steve Neary (guitar and vocals), Rob Bessert (drums), Chris Sell (bass), and Andrzej Benkowski (saxophone, oboe, and violin) is — in the simplest terms and the most convenient definitions – a funk band, a jamband, a fusion band, a disco-fanged multi-beast, and a basket case.

Churning out their self-described Creepfunk, a high energy, danceable variety of funk — one uniquely laced with electronic and improvisational sensibilities – Steez has garnered a loyal following throughout the Midwest. After receiving repeated acclaim for their live performances, which typically include a seamless weaving of thoughtfully composed originals and crowd pleasing covers spanning from Madonna to clever obscurities like Genialistid (Estonia), Steez hit the studio and released their first full length album, Creepfunk Crusade, in August 09 with independent label, Mason Jar Records.

Steez is currently enjoying success from their debut album which has been nominated for Home Grown Music Network’s album of the year, the album charted on both the Homegrown Music Network Radio Charts and the Jambands.com Radio Charts, peaking at #19 and #23, respectively. Steez was featured in the December 09 issue of Relix as a band “on the verge,” and most recently Steez was named one of the 10 most influential bands to come out ofMadison in the last decade. The band is again poised to hop on the bus and build upon the success they’ve garnered from grinding it out on the road.
